[Article / Patents] Use of AI in patent examination (Yasuhiro Igarashi, Patent, August 2025)
Practical patent-examination tasks were tested using cloud models (GPT, etc.) and on-premises models (Llama, etc.).
Introducing generative AI presents distinctive challenges absent from conventional AI.
Addressing hallucinations: Limiting tasks to reducing information (summarization) or transforming it (translation), rather than increasing it (creative answers), effectively minimizes risk.
Keeping pace with model evolution: Models evolve so quickly that new ones appear during research; methods must be kept from becoming obsolete.
While monitoring general-purpose model advances, incorporating reasoning processes specialized for patents will be key.
Generative AI is now evolving into reasoning models performing logical inference and agent models operating external tools.
In specialized domains such as patent examination, practical trial and error remains necessary to reflect examiners' exhaustive search methods and patent-specific vocabulary, rather than merely introducing general-purpose models.
It will be important to identify when to specialize in particular fields while fully utilizing basic capabilities whose evolution has slowed, such as context length.
