IP High Court, Reiwa 6 (Gyo-Ke) No. 10050 — Information processing apparatus (Judge Miyasaka)

*The computations performed by each processing unit contribute to solving the invention’s problem.

→ Qualifies as an “invention.”

(Excerpt from the judgment, translated)

“The patented invention [...] is understood to be implemented by loading a computer program into a computer and operating the computer in accordance with that program. The fund-related computation and optimization performed by each unit are specifically identified. The combination of those units specifically indicates the method, sequence and other aspects of operation of an information processing apparatus for determining the contents of fund products. This serves as the means of solving the patented invention’s problem [...] of providing investors with fund products whose investment targets offer favorable investment returns, supply-demand balance and trading-price stability, and which can realize the profits and losses desired by investors. It can therefore be recognized as an ‘invention.’”
