*Claim wording was deleted, but the amendment was held not to add new matter.

(Excerpt from the court's reasoning)

Amendment 4 deletes “regardless of whether payment-related information is input” from the claimed invention. Literally, …because it deletes a limitation, there is room to interpret it as meaning that “an information processing terminal in which the presence or absence of ‘input of payment-related information’ is relevant to the mode at issue,” previously outside the claimed invention, now falls within the amended invention. However, the claimed invention addresses the difficulty of applying to nonpayment uses the prior-art configuration that performs processing and display prompting the user to read a payment card after the user inputs payment-related information …. It provides an information processing terminal applicable to nonpayment uses and capable of quickly reading required information from an information storage medium, whether contact or contactless …. This is also true of the amended invention.” “It can hardly be considered a reasonable interpretation that the invention after amendment, including Amendment 4, encompasses within its technical scope these ‘information processing terminals in which the presence or absence of input of payment-related information is relevant to the mode at issue.’ Rather, construing the technical scopes of the original and amended inventions in light of the specification, it remains true both before and after amendment that ‘input of payment-related information’ is unnecessary to achieve the mode at issue. It is appropriate to understand the phrase ‘regardless of whether payment-related information is input’ as merely specifying applicability to nonpayment uses. Amendment 4 therefore does not cause the amended invention to encompass matters absent from the original invention. …Since Amendment 4 does not add new matter, …the amendment as a whole narrows the claims.

Translator’s notes (editorial)

The source places a closing and opening Japanese quotation mark between two excerpts without a matching opening at the start; the internal quotation boundary is retained in English.
