[IP Practice Online] “A compass for succeeding in future markets: How to turn IP landscaping into a management tool” (Hiroshi Hirose, patent attorney, Ebara Corporation)
* A must-watch video that examines, from an internal corporate perspective and with consultants' roles also in mind, the approach to involving the IP department efficiently in management strategy that Mr. Akutsu of Shimadzu discussed at the end of his presentation!!
IP departments should make use of their unique strengths: (1) the ability to understand technological trends chronologically, (2) the ability to give concrete form to abstract concepts, and (3) knowledge of contractual matters.
New business proposals must go beyond technical ideas to flesh out business viability and market potential, bringing them to a level capable of persuading those with approval authority.
In organizational terms, a top-down approach from management is ideal. Even without it, however, bottom-up success is possible by establishing a dedicated IPL organization and having it work closely with business divisions and development departments as an integrated trio.
